Hear about travel to Southern New Brunswick as the Amateur Traveler talks to Kirsten Maxwell from kidsareatrip.com about her recent travel to the Province with her family.
Of New Brunswick, Kirsten says, “There is just so much to do in the outdoors there. I have 3 boys so for me that was part of the appeal. It’s adventure. It’s beautiful, stunning scenery.”
We start our itinerary with a trip to the city of St Andrews which was founded by Loyalist families from the United States who moved north after the American Revolution. Both Kirsten and I went out on a whale watching tour to see whales including finback whales, the world’s second-largest whales.
St Andrews, like the rest of the coast of Southern New Brunswick, is on the Bay of Fundy which has the highest tides in the world. We talk about experiencing the tides in places like St Andrews where the tides rushing in create whirlpools or St Martin’s Cave which you can explore inside only at low tide. There are flowerpot rocks, at places like Hopewell Rocks, and there are rapids that change direction with the change of the tides. At low tide, you can walk on the floor of the ocean.
Alma is the entrance to Fundy National Park where Kirsten and her brood hiked to Dickson Falls. There are something like 20 different waterfalls in the park and a great variety of trails.
Kirsten visited the lighthouse on Cape Enrage which has a zip line that looks out on the Bay of Fundy.
Just over the border from New Brunswick in Nova Scotia is the UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Park, Joggins Fossil Cliffs. At Joggins you can find fossils from the age of coal 300 million years ago. It is much easier to get to from the eastern corner of New Brunswick than from Halifax.
St Johns is the capital and the only large city on the Bay of Fundy and is known for its farmer’s market which is the oldest continuous farmer’s market in Canada. They have a boardwalk with restaurants along it and Summer concerts. The kids loved the large whale skeletons at the New Brunswick Museum.
We end our itinerary in Moncton, the largest city in New Brunswick where they experienced Magnetic Hill you can put your car in neutral and it will roll up the hill. They also did their own street art scavenger hunt.
On a beautiful summer day, with a car full of kids, New Brunswick is a great place to explore and unplug.

Justin wrote about Travel to Uzbekistan – Episode 571
Hello Chris, I have been an avid listener of your podcast, and listened to several of them (repeatedly) for the trip I am now on, to Central Asia. I’ve been listening to the one you did in August about Uzbekistan, as I am there right now. Now that I’m at the hotel in Samarkand, I realized I am literally steps from the plov restaurant your guest referred to, but I still can’t find it. We are at the Hotel Sultan, just to the west of the Gur-e Amir Complex. Your guest mentioned the restaurant is “in a house in front of the Gur-e Amir Complex” so we walked the area tonight…

Fredericton is the capital city of New Brunswick not Saint John. And it is Saint John not St. Johns.
St. Johns is in the province of Newfoundland not New Brunswick.
